「忍者」と聞いて、皆の者はどのような姿を思い浮かべるであろうか？
黒装束に身を包み、手裏剣を投げ、煙玉を使って忽然と姿を消す…。そんな忍者の姿は映画やアニメでおなじみのものじゃ。しかし、実際の忍者は果たしてそのような存在であったのか？

1. 服装 – 黒装束は本当に着ていたのか？
映画では、忍者といえば全身黒ずくめの忍び装束を着ておる。しかし、実際の忍者は任務によってさまざまな格好をしておった。
というのも、真っ黒な格好でうろついておれば、むしろ目立ってしまうからじゃ。
本物の忍者は、町人や商人、旅僧、農民などに変装し、敵地に潜入することが多かった。確かに、夜間の隠密行動の際には黒や紺の衣服を身に着けることもあったが、それはあくまで特定の状況に限ったこと。日常的に「いかにも忍者」という姿をしていたわけではないのじゃ。
2. 武器 – 手裏剣はメインウェポンではない？
映画やアニメでは、忍者といえば手裏剣を華麗に投げて敵を倒す場面がよく登場する。だが、実際には手裏剣はあくまで補助的な武器に過ぎなかった。
忍者の主な目的は戦うことではなく、情報を集め、生きて帰ること。戦いになれば、刀や鎖鎌、火器などを用いることもあったが、そもそも戦闘を避けるのが忍者の鉄則じゃった。
